When I was in college, I had a friend named Jacob. Jacob was a bit of a flawed genius. We’ll skip the flawed part for now, and focus on the genius…
Jacob was 15 in his freshman year in college. He aced all the courses he cared about. And he’d have conversations with the university’s smartest professors as if they were peers.
Jacob didn’t merely think about things. He thought about how to think about things. This “meta” perspective is part of what made him so smart.
Which brings me to intelligence.
In his spare time, Jacob thought about things like intelligence. Not just how to be intelligent, but what intelligence actually is. Which might give you context as to why Jacob often repeated this definition to me, in late night conversations at the local coffee joint:
“Intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply information.”
Now, there are a few different definitions of intelligence. And there are ways that intelligence is measured.
For example, you can be great at acquiring and applying information, but you can suck at IQ tests.
In this case, the test would say you have a lower IQ (aka, you’re “not intelligent”). But when you go out into the business world, for example, you may be really great at making sales and profits, or products people want to buy. And, in fact, you might be seen as highly-intelligent by your business colleagues.
If you’ve ever wondered why many people who are hugely-successful at business stunk it up in school and had low GPAs (and even low IQs), this is it.
School focuses on types of intelligence they can measure.
But those who create measurable success in business display the kind of intelligence best captured by Jacob’s definition: the ability to acquire and apply business-related information.
The better you get at acquiring and applying business-related information, the better results you can generate.
Mind Mapping is one of my greatest secrets…
I’ve been pretty successful in business, since deciding that marketing, copywriting, and business were my path, back in 2005.
At the time, I had zero background in marketing or business.
But, I knew I had that special kind of intelligence: I had worked hard and gotten really good at acquiring and applying information. And I could use that intelligence to learn how to create business results. Specifically in the fields of direct response marketing and copywriting.
So, I studied. I dug in. I watched, listened to, and read all that I could get my hands on.

Then, as I applied what I was learning, I’d get even more information, and could update my mind maps with these new insights and perspectives.

Only new applications for old ideas, insights, strategies, principles.
